Spring’s warmth may only just be beginning to settle in, but before you know it, sunny days fit for trips to the beach are going to be filling up your weekends. This means that even though you may not be thinking of it right now, your swimwear will soon be called upon for a series of outings and a single plain bikini simply won’t do. Whether tanning in your backyard, playing volleyball in the sand or sipping a cool drink poolside, each occasion calls for a different type of maillot.

Tanning

This should be fairly straightforward. An itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny is mandatory if you’re planning to get a sun-kissed glow. Look for a bikini where both the top and bottom tie up so that you get the most even all-over tan and can untie the back when you’re laying facedown on your towel. Remember to keep it simple: that one with all the criss-crossed laces and straps may look cute, but just imagine what your tan lines are going to look like. You don’t want to end up a walking spider web.

For the beach, I suggest five different pieces. The first two are the swimsuit top and bottom. Start with a sporty top with good support and add on comfortable bottoms that won’t be pulled off by the waves, such as a pair in a boxer cut. Piece number three is a comfortable pair of beach shorts, whether short, Bermuda-cut or surf shorts that you can wear over your bottoms when throwing around a Frisbee or playing a fun game of beach volleyball. The fourth piece is a nice loose top to throw over yourself when you get out of the water with thin enough material that your swimsuit will dry, but also with long sleeves to protect your arms when the water has washed away your sunblock. The fifth piece is a comfortable straw or baseball hat to shelter your face from the sun’s harmful rays.

Drinks in the Shade

Everyone wants one of those darling one-piece suits being featured in the swimsuit spreads of every magazine, the ones with interesting strappy designs, often with the sides cut out. These maillots are incredibly high fashion and most anyone can find a style and cut to flatter their body type. The only issue is that due to their unconventional designs, they have been known to leave fairly awkward-looking tan lines on the body after a day in the sun. This is why a suit such as this is perfect for a day in the shade while enjoying some fun fruity drinks with friends. If you do have to step out into the sun, I would suggest you play on the haute-couture inspiration of your suit and sport an extra-large beach hat, oversized retro sunglasses, cropped linen pants and fancy gem-studded sandals to finish the look. You might even leave a few people wondering if you’re a celebrity.

A few well-fitting pieces will keep you prepared for any spontaneous activity the warm weather throws your way. Just don’t forget to pack your sunscreen with an appropriate SPF!
